In spring 1970, both Soviet and Chinese military observed numerous UFOs in the border area between China and the USSR, believing them to be espionage planes of the opposite side. On April 24, 1970, a bomber disappeared without trace en route from Moscow to Vladivostok. At the same time the Russian air traffic control registered numerous UFOs. All attempts to shoot them down failed.

By triangulation it was determined that the UFOs came allegedly from somewhere in Gobi Desert, Mongolia, 1000 kilometers north of Ulan Bator. Two days later, the Soviet Army deployed three companies to the site, under the pretext of regular spring maneuvers. Likewise, China moved several divisions on April 27, 1970 to the Mongolian border area. Espionage airplanes from both sides scouted the targeted area in preparation of the attack. On April 28 1970, Russia bombed the site. The Soviet army moved in two days later, and the Chinese troops arrived there on May 4, 1970.

Both Soviet and Chinese media reported a "minor border conflict". However, refugees from the bombed area spoke of hundreds of dead and even of an nuclear bomb being dropped. Additionally, it was claimed that a kilometer long tunnel system underneath the area was destroyed by the attack but its constructors and purpose are unclear.
